Feel free to copy, print anything that is here that will help you. Please contact us at reachkids@cox.net with any questions or additional help.

If the fields are white for harvest, why do we spend all of our money on painting the barn?

The first step in starting a Power Hour is to gather a team and set a time to come together on a regular basis (preferably at least every two weeks) for PRAYER and PLANNING. If you fail to plan, plan to fail.

  • Use part of this time to carefully plan out a one hour program. Click here for a copy of a planning flow sheet.
  • Use the remainder of the time to pray for Workers (Matthew 9:38), Open Doors (I Corinthians 16:19), Provision (II Peter 1:3), and Lasting Fruit (John 15:16).

Choose a curriculum. We highly recommend starting with Power Tool Box curriculum that you can purchase from www.metroministries.org

This curriculum was designed by Pastor Bill Wilson and Pastor Chris Blake. They are the pioneers of Sidewalk Sunday Schools. The curriculum was designed on the streets of Brooklyn, New York.

Establish a leader or facilitator. Everything rises and falls on good leadership:

  • Responsible for site being prepared
  • Responsible for staff being prepared
  • Responsible for what the children will learn
  • Does not mean that the leader does everything.

Site Promotion:

  • Identify site with high concentration of children.

  • Blitz Area with Flyers

    • Flyers should be fun looking "GAMES! PRIZES! ETC".
    • Make sure site location, time and contact person are printed clearly.
    • Leave area at bottom for a tear off for the children's Names, Addresses, Phone number, Birthday, Age.
      • This information becomes important for follow up and visitation.
      • If child brings this portion back to your first Sidewalk Sunday School they will receive
        • Chance to win a big prize and/or a Blow Pop.

The Power Hour Site needs to be friendly, upbeat, exiting:

  • Upbeat Christian Music on (We use urban Gospel and Christian rap)
  • Every child greeted with enthusiasm and excitement. Make this the Super bowl of their week! You may be the only smiling face or the only hug they get all week.
  • Divide boys and the girls. Use two different color tarps for the children to sit on. Boys sit on one color tarp, the girls sit on the other.

PRE-GAMES AND SET UP

  • Arrive early enough to set up without rushing .
  • Designate person or persons to take children away from set area to play games.
    • Relay games
    • Catch games
    • Offer penny candy as prizes

PROGRAM PRESENTATION

  • Welcome – START ON TIME. Open up with enthusiasm. Make it the "Super bowl" of the children's week.
  • RULES - Everyone has to know what is expected of them
    • The rules need to be visual. (Poster board or overhead)
    • Do not give a long list of “do’s” and “don’t's”. Three or four rules are effective.
    • Repeated every week. The power of “spaced repetition” not only works in advertising, but in children’s ministry as well.
    • Whistle - The leader should use a whistle to bring children to attention. Do not overuse it.
